Recently, the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced the short -listed pilot projects of the 10 Gbps Optical Network, deciding to carry out the pilot projects in 168 communities, factories and parks in 86 cities of 30 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) across the country. This pilot will focus on the deployment of key technologies such as 50GPON, FTTR all optical networking and 800G optical transmission, aiming to verify the technical performance and industrial value through practical scenarios.
As the evolution direction of the next generation optical network, the core technology of 10-gigabit optical network shows significant development compared with the existing gigabit network. The differences between 1G and 10G optical network are in the Single User Access Rate, Network Rate, Network Latency, Concurrent Access Capacity, Optical Power Budget and Energy Efficiency.

At the pilot implementation stage, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has mandated that local regions carry out the construction work in phases. By the end of August, the renovation of the aged optical distribution network (ODN) and equipment replacement (with a replacement rate not lower than 90%) must be completed. And by the end of December, the test data of the dynamic bandwidth allocation system integrated with artificial intelligence should be submitted (with the traffic prediction accuracy required to be ≥95%).
The announcement of this shortlist signals that the 10 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (10G PON) will exert a more significant influence in future industrial development. As the upgrade and evolution path of the next - generation optical network, the 10G PON has already emerged as a crucial part of the new - type information infrastructure, deeply remolding the development landscape of the economic and social arenas. Under the guidance of relevant departments, both the upstream and downstream sectors of the industry are bound to surmount the key and challenging issues in the implementation and application of the 10G PON. This will facilitate the transition of the 10G PON from a "showroom" model to a "ready -for -sale housing" model, thereby firmly laying the digital groundwork for new industrialization.
